Located at Apollo Bunder, the Gateway of India is a splendid arch monument erected to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India.

The foundation stone for this structure was laid down by then Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) in the year 1913. Famous architect, George Wittet created the final layout and construction of this giant structure was completed in 1924.

It features basalt-made arch measuring 85 feet from the ground. This monument, the fine blend of Indian and Saracenic style, was built at a cost of hefty 21 lakhs then. This colonial epitaph is the witness of last British ship sailing for England.
